And welcome back to a new semester and new classes and track workouts and weights and reality. We had our first track workout on the indoor track. I ran 3 1200's. The first one, I was all confused about our splits, laps etc (the track is smaller) The second one I led, and felt incredible. Last one, hurt but I got it done. My times were 4:23, 4:18 and 4:16. Not too fast, but it is just the beginning. I ran 8 miles then went to weights. After weights I ran another 5 on the treadmill.

Track workout at the indoor track again. I ran usual 2.5 miles warm up. We ran 400's with 30 seconds recovery at our race pace. I am racing the 5K and I don't really know my race pace so I decided to hit 78-79. The first 4 were confusing- the track is shorter, I didn't know where we were starting/ending and the mile/3K girls were all with us. After 4, only 3 of us were left (me, Darbs and Kathryn who are not racing this weekend in Boise) I was on my own for the rest and felt great until about 7. I ran 9 total and my times were 79, 82, 78, 80, 78, 80, 77, 76, 77. It was hard running alone but it felt really good too. We ran 4 miles outside before weights then I ran another 4 on the treadmill after weights.

I was not supposed to open for another 2 weeks but I decided if I am traveling to run a mile, I am not going to drop out a lap before finishing, no matter how slow I finished. This meet was really small- only 4 other schools and we brought about 55 track girls. I ran usual 2 miles warm up and lots of drills and strides. I was in the second heat with 12 girls- 8 BYU and 4 Boise State. Everyone knew I was to set the pace and everyone follow. There was a lot of elbows and pushing at the start and I got in position with Kelsey right behind me.The goal was 72's for 1200 and then I could drop. Ok- well I haven't run 72's in workouts since June so I could definitely tell. First 400 was 72, and right before the 800 Kelsey passed me. I was 2:27 at the 800 and was just hanging on to finish. 3 more BYU girls passed me and when the 3rd one came I latched on and finished 5th right behind her. I wasn't very focused in this race, but I came to take it out fast and help girls run under 5. And I got to race the mile once in college. After, I did my long run (12 miles) with a 40 minute tempo. My pace was 7:12 and my final 5 miles were the slowest ever. My body was really tired but I finished it.

As I walked to class in -2 weather this morning, I was happy to be running track workout indoors. Wrong. I ran 2.5 warm up on the indoor track then coach told us 3K/5K girls were running a 15 minute threshold outside. Yay. Luckily we got our new running tights that are fleece on the inside. So we bundled up and ran 7 mile Cartersville. The threshold was hard- it hurt to breathe and my legs felt dead. Weights- I was really tired. And after I ran another 4 miles on the treadmill. I cannot wait for Spring weather and warmth again. And new shoes to run in.

Today just sucked. That's really all I can say.

I was already tired going into the workout but I can usually get going and push through a speed workout fine. Not today. I ran usual 2.5 warm up. Then our workout was 8 sets of 2 lappers on the indoor track. Pace- 60 a lap, 2:00 and a lap walk/jog recovery between sets. It sounded fast and felt fast too. The first one, my legs were dead weights and I couldn't snap out of it. I couldn't push myself into a steady pace/rhythm. I ran 2:03, 2:03, and 2:05 then sat one out. I tried another one and ran 2:05 then was told I was done. I was so frustrated. Today felt like the hardest day I have had since running here and honestly I wanted to cry (but I swore to myself months ago no more crying in running- unless it's happy tears) I hate not being able to finish a workout. I hate having to quit early. I hate when mentally and physically I can't handle it. It leaves the worst feeling. I finished running laps to be at 8 miles then after weights ran another 4 on a treadmill. I am exhausted. And want a better workout.

I'm glad you were able to close the week on a positive note. As much as we would always like to feel great and finish every workout on target - our bodies sometimes rebel against us. I think many of us here on the blog can remember a bombed workout followed by a fantastic race/workout shortly after that. Way to get it done!

Well after a lot of confusion yesteday, I ended up racing first thing in the morning instead of late afternoon. We didn't get to the hotel until late and I had to wake up at 6:30 so I was worried I would be tired. Not. I even woke up before my alarm and felt so good. I knew it would be a good day. I warmed up about 2 miles and got my strides in. I was in the second heat and Andrea and I decided we would be 1, 2 and our goal was to run 59-60 second laps (307 meter track) I sat with the group for the first 2 laps because we were right on for the splits. The third lap was slow so I immediately moved, a lot, to catch the few front girls. Andrea came with me and we pushed together until we were with the front two girls. She took the lead and I was in fourth and got gapped. I was starting to feel tired and knew now was the time to work and gut it out. I focued on Andrea and the other girl and closed the gap with only two laps left. With 400 left, I moved up and on the bell lap took control and kicked like crazy. I finished first in the heat and Andrea right behind me. We were so happy. It was amazing to work together to run the times we wanted and it helped so much! After lunch with my brother, I ran a 6 mile cool down. The rest of the girls did amazing today and we all feel good about our performances. (Shout out to Kelsey who ran 2:04 in the 800!)

Hallelujah- there was sunshine!! That made today a lot better. Our flight home yesterday was supposed to land at 4. Due to a snowstorm, the airport was closed, we sat on the plane in Boise for 2 and a half hours waiting and got back to Provo very late. I didn't get much sleep and was hoping for no workout but we had a workout. We ran 1, 2, 3 workout. 1 800 at current mile race pace, 2 400's at goal mile pace, and 3 200's at current 800 race pace. Sometimes I hate just being told "goal pace" (when I don't run that event) or"current pace" (if I haven't raced it yet) So our 800 was slow- 2:31. 400's were 71 and 200's 33. It was a fast workout but manageable because we didn't run a lot of reps. My legs were heavy during the intervals. After weights, I ran outside in the blue skies and sunshine. It felt so good so I ran 6 more. And was reminded why I love to run and love high miles.

Today's workout was hard, but good. Usual 2 mile warm up, then we ran 6 800's at 2:35 with 4 minutes recovery between sets. We split into two groups so it would be easier to run and began. The first one was just getting the pace and we decided we could hit all of them. It helped to rotate who led and we kept pretty consistent. After 5, some girls were done and I was really tired. But I always ran 6 in high school and couldn't stop now. I joined with the other group and held on for dear life through the last repeat. (a chicken noise even came out the last repeat... everyone was confused) My times wee 2:36, 2:36, 2:36, 2:35, 2:35 and 2:32. It was the first workout I completed, ran well and had jell-o legs really bad. I can't believe I used to run sub 2:30 in that workout. After weights, I ran 4 more on the treadmill. I felt completely exhausted, drained and it was satisfying.

I ran a mile shake out with Nikki this morning before breakfast. My legs definitely do not feel as fresh as last time and I knew it would be a race I would have to push hard through. I didn't race until about 7 in the evening so I relaxed all day and took a nap. I warmed up 3 miles with Sus! I was so happy to see her and it was amazing to race with my teammate. I was in the 3rd heat and started out fine. There was a lot of jostling, close falls, elbow throwing and I never got into a good pace/rhythm during the whole race. I was in good position for about the first mile then saw that lap counter still had 10 on it. Great. I started getting passed until I saw Sus move. I tried to move closer to her and told myself it was just like running death speed workouts in high school. I just focused on hanging onto the big group. It was frustrating because it was a race I didn't feel at all alert, focused and ready to race. I was really just getting pulled along. I was happy with my time (a big PR since my high school 5K) It was weird running a 5K on a track but it is something I need to get used to!

3 miles warm up before our workout. I loved today because 5K girls split from the 3K/milers so we actually ran the pace we needed to. We ran 3x1 mile repeats at 5K pace (add 5 seconds for altitude) with 10 minutes recovery between sets. The first 2 repeats, I was by myself. The first one, I was exactly on and ran a 5:26. It felt so good to be pushing and pacing myself. I was able to tell when to pick it up or keep it even. It felt really good and the long recovery was amazing. The second one I ran 5:25 and the last one Kathryn ran with me. I felt much more tired on the last one and it was harder to push through but running with someone really helped. My determination for this workout actually came from a workout more than a year ago. Last November, while training for Footlocker, Bill brought in pacers and the workout was 3x1 mile at 5:25. It was a really hard workout, I crashed and couldn't run the pace. I was so disappointed, frustrated and I told myself someday I would run it, and today was the day. I got all my miles in before weights and got my calves rubbed out. It hurt like none other.

Today wasn't the best day. It was sunny so we ran the workout on the outdoor track. I ran 3.5 warm up (it took us a while to get outside and organized) We ran 1x1200, 2x800 at 3K pace and 3x400 at mile pace. I wanted to run 78's and was awkwardly stuck just behind the mile group and in front of the 5K group. The 1200 was fine- I ran 3:53. I didn't feel great but I did it. The next 800 was 2:34 and it felt really hard. There was wind and I was mostly by myself. The next 800 was a 2:38 and I did not feel good at all. I didn't feel any sense of rhythm or pace and was so so frustrated. Coach told me I was done so I started running miles while waiting. I ran to 9 miles and felt so frustrated the whole time. After weights, I started on my usual 4 mile run but turned back early. I didn't know why until I was at the outdoor track again. I couldn't let myself not finish no matter how crappy or slow I was. (it was a big mental struggle today) So I ran 3x400 at 72, 71, 73. It wasn't fast but I did it and felt a little better.

Today was an improvement from Monday. It was a gorgeous day to be outside! I loved it. We ran 2x1600 with 10 minutes recovery between. First repeat, I just ran in the pack sticking on the girl in front of me. We were 2 seconds off before the last lap, so I picked it up and finished at 5:21. The next repeat, we decided to switch pacing because of the wind. 2 girls led for the first 800 and then Laura and I moved up to finish. The first 800 didn't feel too bad and then we came around at the 800 at 2:45. Aw crap. So I moved and got Laura right with me and we pushed hard. The last lap hurt like crazy but we finished in 5:22. I ran a cool down to get to 8.5. I was super tired in weights and am happy my arms are still intact. My 4.5 after was really slow. I was tired but it was a good tired- a tired I am used to. The tired that comes from giving your best at  a workout not the other tired crap.

Especially as people were sitting out or running 800's, it was hard the last lap. My legs didn't hurt but my breathing was out of control.. ok I was breathing really fast and it hurt... and I was tired. I sat out the fourth and then led the last one, which of course the wind picked up alot. I finished and knew I was done; my whole body hurt and was tired. My times were 3:59, 4:01, 4:01 and 4:03. I ran 4 more after weights. My arches hurt mostly during my cooldown and my second run so I iced them. Again.

Me and Darbs and Kelsey are not racing this weekend so we ran 3x800 at 3K pace with 3 minutes rest between each. I ran 2:32, 2:34, 2:32. It is really weird being the only girl on my team in a race... I ran 2 miles warm up around the football stadium and trails then did some strides and ready to go. I felt pretty good but was really nervous going in. I wanted to run 80's and so I focused on that and racing with girls and not getting stranded like in indoor. The race took off and I saw Sus take the lead and create a gap between the next group. My first lap was 77 and I spent the first mile trying to stay calm and stick with the pack. I forgot how much jostling there is when you are not in the lead! My first mile was 5:20 and honestly the rest is kind of a blur. The pack eventually spread out and I had to work really hard to stay with girls to push with. I was really tired- not quite as bad as the UW meets but my mind just felt clouded and I couldn't push through it. I am not too thrilled with my time- I was hoping I would be faster and feel better. But I am happy I was able to push up and past girls the last half. I ran 5 miles cool down around campus. Today was a gorgeous day! I ran 2 sets of 6 400's at 1500 pace with 200 meters jog between each one and 2 laps between sets. The hardest and frustrating part of this workout is knowing how fast I used to run a 400 workout and what I am able to do now. I was alone- there were a few 1500 girls but they only ran 8 and were 2 seconds faster. I wanted to run 72-73. My first set was 72, 71, 71, 73, 72, 72. Second set was 72, 72, 73, 72, 71, 72. I puked a little after 8 and wanted to puke more but never did. The last 2 were the hardest because I could tell I was tired and everyone was done running on the track. But I am happy I got it all done. I was exhausted after- weights was long and my 4 miles after were really slow.

This race was really fun! I didn't think I would ever get to race the 1500 so I was excited to run it. I went in with the attitude of enjoying the race and not dreading or being mad at how I do. It was a small meet and I was in the fastest heat with 8 other girls. As soon as we started, I dropped to the rail and ran on the INSIDE of lane 1. There was a pack, gap then 1 girl and me. I stuck behind the girl until the 800 when I passed her. She passed me with 500 to go and I sat on her until 300 when I kicked. I finished 8th overall and felt pretty good. It was really fun to run something so short and faster. The best part was coming around the first lap and the lap counter showed only 3 laps left! (instead of 12). Slept for an excellent ten hours, ran a mile shakeout around the hotel parking lot and then took another 2 hour nap between studying. My race was at 10 and I was in a faster heat. I only ran a mile warm up then got some good strides on the track. The first mile of the race was a lot of jostling and moving around with 40 girls. I just ran with the pack the first mile and my mile was 5:23. Then the race started to spread out more. I felt really good and was determined to have a good race and focused on running 80's. I was right on and just kept moving up and remembered to run on the rail. I never thought "oh that girl is too far. I can't get her"I just moved until I was right behind her and would maybe sit then move again. I knew I felt good because as I was running with girls, I would tell them "push with me!" or "great job!" That never happens.... The last 1,000 hurt but I managed to pass 2 girls and focused on holding them off. I felt so amazing and happy when I was done. This was the race I have been waiting for for so long! Not only did I run the time I wanted, I felt like I was smart in my race and ran it well. The only bad part was that I couldn't fall asleep until 4:30 and got a grand total of 2 hours of sleep. Yay.

I felt like I could lay down in the middle on the repeat and fall asleep. I almost didn't finish but that is why I am grateful for a team. I hung on for dear life the last repeat just to finish. Well it wasn't the best way to end the season but that's just how it went. I ran a 1.5 mile warm up and did usual pre race routine. There were 28 girls in the race and it was dang hot and humid when we ran. The first mile, I just told myself to be patient and run with the group. And it felt hard to hang with the group. There were some stupid rookie mistakes but I guess you race for experience. There was not a clock at the 200 (where the 5K started) so I couldn't follow my splits as well as Mt. Sac. Coach was right by the crowd and every other coach and I only heard him about 3 times the whole race. I was in the back of the main pack when the first group split and that was the group I should've been with. With 6 laps, I knew I was off pace and just quit looking at the clock and focused on racing. I caught and passed 3 girls and caught up to my teammate and another girl. I sat with them for 600 and when they didn't pick it up, I moved. I ran the last 1000 alone and the next girl 50 meters ahead. It sucked to be by myself but I managed to catch the girl right at the line. I was mad about this race but it was good experience. I had too much left the last laps to try and make up ground. I am always stronger than I think and I should've moved up further and group and stuck in the beginning of the race. It really sucks to end the season with a bad race but I am just hoping to do better next time around.

Today's tempo was the complete opposite of last week. We started out hard and had to work hard to maintain. I had more miles and a longer tempo so I split from the group 15 minutes in to run extended extended over the bridge. I averaged 6:48 and was so tired by the end. My last 5 miles were quite slow and my legs so tired.

Today was quite possibly one of the worst runs ever. I slept in so it was hot starting out. About 2 miles in, I stopped sweating and literally could not run a decent pace. I was pushing to run 8:30's. I was super dehydrated but finally got the miles over with.

Total Distance

Today was an amazing run. I went to Provo to run with Laura and Ashleigh. We started about 1 mile up from Vivian Park in Provo Canyon and ran all the way back to the fieldhouse. This week is incredibly hot to be running so Tomy and I decided to try and beat the heat by running at 3 A.M. It was still hot. But at least we didn't have to watch for cars and had a good run. We started at Highland and ran to Wasatch Drive, down Sunnyside and back along 1500 E. and add one lap at Sugarhouse. I was really tired running in the middle of the night but it was awesome!

Total Distance

I had planned to run yesterday, but our boat broke and we got home at 4 A.M. this morning. I ran from my house up Emigration 5 miles and back. The worst part was the feeling that the ground was rocking back and forth the whole run. But  I had a blast at Powell and enjoyed the short break.

Total Distance

Today's run was one of those worst case run scenarios come to pass. I ran 5 miles with the earlier group then we ran cemetery run. My legs were really tired and heavy so I decided not to do the lap in the cemetery and head back. Right then my nose started bleeding. Correction, gushing. I had to lay down for about 15 minutes until it stopped. And my clean, white tank looked like I had been stabbed. Oh well. I didn't die and it was adventure.

Wheeler Farm this morning. We did usual 2 mile warm up loop then 8 strides on the grass. We ran a fartlek workout: 1-2-3-4-3-2-1 on and 1 and 2 minutes recovery between. I haven't run fartlek in such a long time. It saved me that Chris ran with me and I had someone to push with. I was really tired by the end but happy I actually got a workout in. What a morning! I was up by 3:30 and at the start line by 4:30. Great. I sat and talked with Laura and Emily for an hour. Then I ran .5 warm up, stretched and did a few strides. I started out right with the lead girls. My first mile was 5:25 and the next 3 were around 5:40. It was faster than I was expecting to run but I wanted to keep contact as long as I could. Just past the 4 mile mark, I got gapped and was by myself for the next 9 miles. I felt very focused and fine until I turned onto Foothill Drive. I used to think it was downhill, but it definitely was not. I had slowed down and was fighting just to keep a good pace going. I finally made it to South Temple and just tried to keep it low 6's. My legs were really tired and dead and it felt really long. It helped turning onto the parade route but it felt like the longest finish of my life. I am happy with how I did. A little disappointed I couldn't hang on longer but I did what I could. The gu at mile 4 and 8 helped me so I didn't crash as bad the last 5K as I did in my last half. But I got my goal of running under 1:20! I ran 2 miles at the race with Tomy and another 2.5 at home.

I couldn't get out of bed today. I knew it would be rough as soon as I woke up and EVERYTHING hurt! I was in for a loooong run so I took my I pod to keep me entertained. I ran to the cemetery on 500 S. and did 2 laps then to Sugarhouse and a lap around. I averaged 9:30 pace. And that was hurting. My calves aren't too bad but my quads absolutely kill. I stretched, rolled and iced for 20 minutes.

PM I ran 4 more after babysitting.

Total Distance

I ran to the zoo trail to meet the team (2.5 miles) We ran across shoreline to Red Butte and up to the fence. It is a lot shorter than I remembered. PM Tomy and I ran 6 more to Shriners and back.

I am with my family this weekend in Sundance so I got to run down Provo Canyon! My siblings and nieces and nephews rode bikes down the trail from Vivian Park to the gas station so I ran. It was later in the day so it was hot but not too bad. By the fountain, about 3 miles down, I saw a small dirt trail going up so I followed that and found a gravel road at the top that goes for quite a ways. I only ran a mile on it but am so happy I found a trail to run! I also biked 6 miles with my cousin.

It feels oh so glorious to finish a long week with only 8 miles! I did a happy dance after my workout. This morning was the threshold. It was freezing cold when we started. We ran about 2.5 warm up before starting. I had 2 goals for the camp threshold this year- stick with the lead group and average 6 flat pace. Fortunately, we actually started at the right place and it was 2.9 miles long. We eased into it which helped. My first mile was 6:10 and then the lead group started to pull away. There were 6 of us in a group all pushing- the second mile was 6 flat. One girl dropped before the finish, but 5 of us finished in a line with a time of 17:24 and average 6 flat. Score. It felt amazing to have girls to push with and work with. I really hope we can keep that up this season- it will make a world of difference.

The tempo felt good- My legs felt awesome but I was breathing hard. The hills got me every time. Again, we had a great group. 7 of us finished in a perfect line with a time of 32:39 ( aroun 6:30 average) It felt a lot better to push with a group of girls. I was going to run more cooldown, but stomach was hurting so I just did 2 miles.

A.M. I ran to the temple and back for 4 miles. I was really tired and ran slow and stretched after.

P.M. Today's workout was something we have never done before and I really liked it. We had 2 groups based on when you could make it. I went in the afternoon so it was SO HOT! And just happened to be with the freshmen and sophomores. We ran 1 mile warm up to the intramural fields and started. We ran a workout of tempo and threshold pacing. We ran big loops on the fields, each one just under 800 meters. Each circuit was 3 laps at tempo pace then an 800 at threshold pace. For tempo, we were supposed to run 3 minutes a lap so 9 minutes. Then we had 15 seconds to kick off our shoes and socks and run the 800 barefoot on the grass (it felt incredible to be barefoot!) The first one, we started too fast and finished in 8:54. I wasn't sure how fast to go on the 800, but I ran a 2:35 (we needed to run 2:30) We jogged a big lap and started again. The second one was the best, we ran 3 flat each lap to finish at 9 and the 800 was 2:29. The group had really spread out and I was by myself on the 800. Luckily, Nicole and Andrea just showed up and they ran the last one with me. I started too slow on the last set, but just stuck to those two and we finished in 8:57 then a 2:28. I was SO grateful to have them to stick on the last one. My legs were so tired and my body wanted to stop. I ran a lap then back to the fieldhouse for 9.

A.M. Ran my new 4 mile loop by my house.

P.M. Workout at the track- similar to last week's. The big loop was the loop on the BYU XC invite course (- the baseball diamond) We ran 3 circuits and each circuit was 2 laps. The first lap was tempo pace, the second lap was tempo pace until we hit the track. Then we ran race pace to the finish. The first one felt good- we ran a good pace. Second, we sped up. Classic. Third, the race part was all out race. (some girls were feeling good I guess) I ate too soon to the workout and wanted to puke the whole time and my legs were tired. Ran a cool down to get to 11. We started weights AKA testing. I did ok on the leg press, still can't do a pull up and not too great at bench. Oh well!

Today was not much better. I woke up to run, and it was dark and raining so I just went back to bed. We had our workout at Kiwanis Park, again similar to the last two. The big loop was around the park and soccer fields (each about.9) We ran 2 circuits, each 3 laps. First lap, jog. Second lap, tempo pace then 1 minute race pace, 1 minute tempo, and 1 minute race pace (which brought us to the end of the lap) and third lap jog. I like running continuous workouts at tempo then threshold pace like this. But today my legs felt like crap. I was just hanging on with the group. I stopped at 10 miles and hopefully they will feel better for Saturday. We finished weight room testing and the ice bath closed before I could get in.

It's racing season again!! I was SO excited to get to race in Utah again. (I haven't since state track senior year) The golf courses wouldn't let us run there, so the collegiate races were in the morning with the high school races. Idaho State, Weber and Portland all came. Our goal of the race was to RUN AS ONE. I got 2 miles warm up, strides then we started. I knew my group of 4 I needed to be with and that was my focus. After the first loop around the baseball field, a Portland and Idaho State girl took the lead and it picked up a lot. Our first mile was 5:40, needless to say I slowed down a bit. The second mile on this course is always the hardest for me. I was able to maintain contact with my group and stick with them up and down again but I was already tired and dreading another 2 miles. I don't remember my 2 mile split but 3 BYU girls were together and I pushed up the the fourth. We worked together up to the baseball field and down again. I could see the 3 ahead of me but couldn't quite close the gap. One Portland girl passed me before the track and I didn't catch her. My time was slow (the course was a little long) and I was really tired. Personally, I know I can have a better race. It was a different mentality running as a team instead of just me. But it helped too. BYU placed 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11 and we won the meet! I was really happy about that. After lunch with my fam I ran 9 miles cool down. I am so tired.

We ran 30 minutes jogging then we ran 15 minutes at tempo and 10 minutes at threshold up left fork. The tempo felt good but the threshold hurt. The group seperated and my goal was to stick with the top 5 which I did. It was so nice to have people to run with. I was really tired by the end. I ran 2 miles down the canyon with Jenn, Sarah and Mckenna. It was a lot steeper than we felt going up! We got dropped off by the freeway exit and ran back to the fieldhouse to finish miles.

Today was a pain to get in miles. I am doing a running study and couldn't run before so I didn't do my usual morning run. For practice, we did our annual trail run up South Fork. It was beautiful! But only about 4.5 miles. After dinner and devotional with the team, I ran another 4.

Today was team pictures and we missed our window of sunshine for workout. We ran 2 miles warm up then did circuits at the track. Each circuit was 1 lap on the track at 85, 2 big grass laps, the first tempo pace, second threshold pace then 1 track lap at 85. We only had time for 2 circuits but each was 2 miles long. We had a group of 7 of us all together and it felt good to run with the pack. It started pouring rain and I ran home to finish at 10 then ran 6 more with one of my other friends.

AM Ran 7 mile Carterville with Carrie.

PM ran 4 mile dirt trail with Rachel and Danica.

It is way too early in the season for the miserable cold weather! We ran at the intramural fields today. We ran 3 circuits, each one about 1.4 long. We ran 400 meter at 85, then ran 800 meters at tempo, about 800 meters at threshold and finished with a 400 at 85. I was late to practice and missed the first one. I ran 8:25 and 8:21 with the group. Then Jenn and I ran the last one by ourselves. I really didn't want to run slower and pushed hard. And I felt better actually leading and setting the pace so we ran 8:08.

Total Distance

The only time I could run today was at 6 AM. Joy. I ran 2 miles then met up with Jenn and Maren to run 11. It was so cold and felt like January. Even tights and a jacket I never really warmed up and we finished before the sun was really up. I was pretty tired but grateful Jenn and Maren ran with me.

AM- Usual 4 miles

PM- today was a dang good workout and my best I have had in a long time. We ran 2 miles warm up then we ran 3x1600 with goal pace of 5:30, 5:20, 5:10 with 5 minutes rest in between. I was nervous. I haven't run that fast in a LONG time but oh well. It was a day to hang on for dear life.  Our first group was 8 of us. The first repeat was 5:29, the second 5:22. The last one, we were right on the first 800 but people were dropping back. I could tell we slowed after the 800, so I took the lead to help pace and finish. My last lap was a 74 and I hit 5:13. Slow, but I finished. This workout makes me feel a lot better about racing this weekend and I am excited!

RACE DAY! It was a nice hot and HUMID day to run. (disgusting how wet with sweat we were by the end) I ran 2 miles warm up, did strides and got in our box to start. We had 9 girls on our team racing. The start is on a wide open field but bottlenecks so fast. After it narrows, it turns between trees. A recipe for disaster for the start of a cross race. I got out in the middle of the pack and as soon as it narrowed, about 5 girls fell. We hurdled them and for another 200 meters it was push and shove, stop and go. Finally it opened a little more and I saw my teammates. I realized I felt pretty dang good and started moving. I could see Andrea further up and decided to catch her. I started weaving and passing girls, never settling. Nicole was with me and Sarah and McKenna following as well. I didn't get my first mile split but finally caught Andrea after the mile. I was around 35th and decided I wanted to finish top 20. I still felt amazing and decided to keep moving and find Lindsey. I hit mile 2 around 11:16 and realized Lindsey was NOT ahead of me. (find out after the race, she was one of the girls who fell at the start) I still felt good and kept trying to catch girls. It hit me about the last 1K that I was tired and dead. I was on the verge of 20th and I had come this far, I was going to be there. I was so tired coming in the finish but was able to pass a few girls. It hit me after how incredible I had felt for most of that race. I had not felt that good, that focused, that driven in a long time. I usually settle and sit somewhere but today I was able to continually move up and pass people. And best of all, our team was 4th! We were so happy about that! I ran 8 miles cool down around the lakes and through Narnia.

AM- 10 mile run in Chicago. We ran from our hotel to this awesome trail in the woods. It was really pretty just so humid! After getting home, I finished 4 more. My legs are so tired. I couldn't sleep last night. That's how I know it was a good race.

PM- Today, I got to do the legendary BYU workout of 25x400! I didn't get to do it in track (because I was racing) but it was my goal to finish the whole thing when I did do it. 2 mile warm up, then we began. Our first group was our usual 8; we lined up 2 by 2 and rotated leaders and inside/outside. We ran the 400's at 83 with 30 seconds rest. The last 400 was all out. The first few were just getting into the pace and anxious during the rest time but once we got going, the 83's just kept coming. I started getting tired 4 miles in.  I just stared at the back of Nikki's head to try and zone out and run. The recovery felt like nothing and it felt like we started right away every time. The last one was my worst.  We were all spread out and I ran a 69. I was so happy to be done and happy to say I finally did this workout! And the best part, I only needed 1.5 miles cool down. Score.

Did the running study and got in 3 miles before practice. We ran at Kiwanis Park today. And it was not my day. It has been a super long, stressful week and I let it get in the way of my workout mentally. We ran 800's; the uphill short loop with a short jog recovery, then a downhill loop (this one was .55 long) with a little longer rest. We ran the first 6 in spikes. The first 2 were 2:50 and 3:12. The next 4 were about 5 seconds faster (around 2:45 and 3:07) Right from the get go my quads were dead weights and my body tired. I forced myself to just stick with the group and make it through. We thought we were done after 6, but nope. We put on our trainers and ran 2 more. At this point, we were told to stop when we needed to. The next one we ran barefoot and I knew I was done. I finished with 9 (a few girls did 10) but did not feel good. I am so tired after Wednesday's workout and just want this week to be OVER. Ran Seven Peaks- Center Street to finish miles.

I was planning on splitting my miles, but didn't have time. After helping at the homecoming race, a group of us did our run. Luckily, McKenna was with me and also needed 13. It's taken me a while to finally blog about Wisconsin. It did not go as well as I wanted, and as our team wanted and I have tried to figure out what I need to fix. First, the race. We started out all together- about 7 of us. Our first mile was 5:40, slower than mine last year. I saw Andrea start to move and I decided to match everything she did. I followed her weaving through people for the next mile. After the 2 mile, I started falling back a little and felt like puking right there. At the 4K I could still see her and focused on getting to her. By the 5K I was with her and we were able to push together the last 1K. My time was much slower than last year which is always frustrating. Our top 5 were 17 seconds apart but way too far back from where we wanted to be. This race is so big you really need to get out hard to get sucked into the faster group otherwise it is too hard to catch up. I got out too slow and wasn't able to make up lost ground. I just hope we can work on that the next few weeks. Ran cool down miles some on the treadmill and around the hotel for 15.

Today was frustrating. We worked out at a different time so not everyone was together. We ran 3x 1600 on the intramural fields. We ran the first 400 at 75 then settled into 85 pace. We got 8 minutes rest and we changed out of our spikes to trainers, ran a lap, and then put spikes back on. I hit 75 for the first 400 every time but could not get to where I needed. I was behind the main group of 5 and just couldn't close the gap and get with them. The first one was 5:38, second 5:34 (despite BOTH spikes coming untied.... Yes Bill, I need to loop them like you taught me) and the last 5:38. It was the first workout I couldn't be with the girls I usually am and I felt really frustrated and tired.

I could race in Malibu anyday! It is beautiful here! The course was 4 loops- a longer downhill start and 2 uphills. I did a mile shake out before breakfast and then a 2 mile warm up. My goal today was to race my race and get where I needed to be sooner. I started out with the front group and honestly it's hard to remember my race. I had a fast first mile, and relaxed a little off the main group after the first mile. I could see Sarah ahead of me and I moved and caught her to have someone to push with. It was definitely a race where I was tired and had to fight to stay focused and moving. Before mile 2, the front pack was all spread out. (Last year we had a pack until the last 800). I made a decision, as much as I didn't want to and was hurting, to be top 10. I had to pass 3 girls and maintain to be top 10. I could see Dre the whole time and tried to match when she would surge and started kicking down the home stretch. Our team tied Portland 62-62 and we lost the tie and were 3rd. After awards, we ran down to the beach and jumped in the ocean before driving to the airport. And unfortuantely, I didn't get all my cool down miles that I needed. I am happy I finished top 10 but know that I can race even better.

Today's workout was hard but really good. We ran 800's at the intramural fields. The best thing I did for myself today was to put down the watch and run with the girls I needed to. We started with the first 200 at 35, then settle into 80 pace. It was so hard to start that fast every time. The first one was a 2:40 so our main goal was to hit the 35 and a 75 at the 400 and try to maintain. I was able to run with Dre and Kelsey the whole time and ran 2:37-2:38. We finished after 7 and I was so happy to be done- I was shaking like crazy the last few.

Today was a beautiful day for a workout at the track. We ran mile repeats: one lap on the track, big grass loop and finish on the track (like our circuits) We started the first 200 at 35, came through the 400 at 75, pass the 800 around 2:35 and then settle to a threshold pace. The hardest part was betweent the 400 and 800 when we had to maintain on the grass. But running the threshold pace felt the best. We ran 5:43, 5:37 and 5:32 and felt really good. I ran 5 miles cool down with McKenna to finish.

As it is the week of a big race, I was really hoping for an easy workout and all of us were shocked when we ran the dreaded, all season anticipated ALL OUT MILE. At first I thought coach was joking when he said that but nope. We did it. 2 miles warm up then hit the track hard. I was really nervous to run it but we were all in it together which helped. We started fast (a few girls only ran 800's and helped the leaders) It was rough but rewarding. I ran a 4:55 and was 5th. The miracle- our top 9 were ALL UNDER 5! Coach always says he expects that and we finally did it. Sarah finished first with 4:48 and Nicole was the last with a 4:57. So it was actually pretty cool. A lot of cool down after.

Woke up to snow- it's going to be a cold race! We ran a mile shake out before breakfast then headed to the course. Usual 2 mile warm up, potty break, strides, team cheer and prayer. I felt good and was ready to race so we could go to Nationals (we all had our rats for nats!). First start, I got out well but someone fell so we had to start again. My second start was about the same- we had practiced a fast start then settling into a pace. That is exactly what happened and for the first time I was grateful for the fast starts we had practiced. The first big loop, no one wanted to take the lead. We were all in a group, kinda sitting and waiting. Sarah and Dre took it at about the mile and I was close behind them. As we hit the two mile, just like coach had predicted, the Colorado team finally moved up and the whole race took off. In that moment, I hurt and mentally decided not to move with. That hurt my place later. I snapped out and was sticking with the girl next to me. Before mile 3 I was really hurting, but heard Lindsey right behind me. Nicole, Sarah, Lindsey and I were all together at that point (Dre was ahead) and that was our top 5 and we needed to beat some girls. I followed Linds as she started moving and passing people. It hurt but I finished 22nd. Personally, I hurt and was tired. I placed further behind than last year which is a bummer. However, our team was 3rd which was our goal! We have done everything we can to qualify and now we wait. After lunch, it took a long time to get home. We all gathered in coach's office and watched the FloTrack predictions. This is probably one of my favorite moments thus far in collegiate running- They announced one by one the teams going to Nationals. Before announcing the 31st team, they announced the first two teams not going. FINALLY, #31 team was BYU!! We all screamed, started crying and flippin out. We will know for sure tomorrow if we are going! Quite full of energy, we finished 5 miles cool down ending at Coldstone to celebrate with ice cream.

Long run in the snow! After a short nap, we met again at the fieldhouse for the official announcement- WE'RE GOING TO NATIONALS!!! I am so excited!! We wrote quotes on the tarp again and the one I wrote was "the chief cause of failure is trading what we want most for what we want at the moment" That was my theme senior track season in high school. It's pretty rainy here! The course is closed today so we drove to some trail in the woods in Terre Haute. It was pouring rain but we ran around this awesome lake- it was gorgeous. We ran at the course today and it is pretty muddy and wet. The start is in standing water and most of the course is just thick, wet mud. And it just keeps raining so tomorrow will be interesting! Tonight was my favorite night of Nationals- we had our cross country devotional at the ward here. We also had a final team meeting, adding more quotes to the tarp and talking about our season and the WHY of being here. I love BYU.

Racing nationals was definitely an adventure! Luckily it didn't rain today, but the course was total mud and it was FREEZING! I wore every running item I had brought on the trip to stay warm in the tent while waiting to warm up. We ran 2 miles warm up then headed to the line. It was awful having to strip away the warm layers to race. I wore my arm sleeves, calf sleeves, headband and gloves (for just the first 3K)  during the race. With the wind chill, it was 11 degrees! The start had been moved up 100 meters so we weren't starting in standing water. I got a good start but was definitely worried about the mud from the get go- it just sapped away energy from your legs trying to race through it.

I was in a good place with my teammates until about mile 1 when someone passing me stepped on the back of my spike... ah shoot. My first instinct was to kick it off right away but I was running through mud and if I was barefoot for the rest of the course, that would suck. Coach's voice came to mind (along with rule #1 and rule #2) "if your spike gets stepped on, unless you are in the last 800 meters, do not kick it off. Stop, pop it back on and keep going." So I jumped to the side, popped it back on and jumped back in. Kenna yelled at me "catch me!" when I stopped, so that helped get me back moving. I passed her and Nicole and way behind Sarah who I usually follow. The next 2K, I struggled mentally because I was so far back in the race. I finally got myself to keep moving up and passing. About the 5K was the worst mud- girls were sliding everywhere and my spikes and toes were so squishy. I started laughing watching everyone slip and slide. I saw Sarah start to fall back (at the point where I usually catch her and we finish together) and I kept moving to try and catch her by the finish. She finished 6 seconds ahead but it helped me to snap back into moving up. I finished with a slow time but it's the best I could do that day. BYU came in as the 31st team and we finished 28th and that was our goal. I am so happy we got to race at nationals this year! Even though I wish I had a better race, it was an important learning experience. We'll be back next year and hopefully in sunshine and a dry course!

Today we did something we haven't done before- the beep test. I always hated metranomes playing the piano but with running it's even worse. We ran a 2 mile warm up then did it in the IPF. We ran 40 meters across and back to the machine which sped up every 8 sets with 10 seconds rest between each stride. You keep running until you miss the beep two times (AKA can't keep up)  It was short but it got pretty fast. I was tired by level 25 and wanted to be done by 50. I made it to level 68 and was finally done. The last 4 girls made it to 74. I ran 2 miles cool down.

Today did not get off onto a great start. I was running with a group of 6 planning on doing 8 or 9 miles. We were only 400 meters into the run when I fell. BOO. I was running from the sidewalk to the road by Helaman Halls and it looked all clear of snow and ice. But the white line of the crosswalk was very icy. I slipped on that and instead of falling sideways, my knees buckled and I landed straight on my knees before falling over. It hurt so flippin bad. My knees were ringing with pain and felt locked- I had the girls lift me up because I couldn't move. It all happened so fast but I said I was fine and wanted to get my miles in, so we ran Carterville. My knees hurt (obviously) my left knee started killing by mile 4 and the last mile I was limping along I finished at 7 to inspect the damage. My right knee was really scraped up- my thick tights ripped and I was bleeding a lot. My left knee wasn't as scraped but it was the one that really hurt. I went to get them cleaned and bandaged in the training room and just went home.

I was able to walk today without limping so I tried running. I ran on the indoor track with Carrie. First mile, I was fine. Second, my left knee started killing like before so I stopped. I ran on the alter g for the first time- it is awesome! I wanted to do 7 or 8 but even at 75% my knee was killing by mile 5. I got anti-inflammortories to help the swelling. I was limping around tonight and I am going to take tomorrow off.

This weekend I was able to move my left knee and bend it without hurting so I decided to get all the miles I could before getting my wisdom teeth on Thursday. I ran with a group of 7 and we did a fartlek- 5-3 on Carterville. My knee was tender the first 3 miles but after the fartlek to the end of the 9 miles it hurt so bad. I went in to the trainer and got a brace to wear when I run and any other time. It is still irritated and inflamed but running won't make it worse. So I ran 4 more with the brace and iced my knee after.

Just to last the day,  I ran on the alter g. I did 6.5 at 70%. It hurt but not as bad as yesterday and running on the dreadmill was not as bad as before. Later I had to do the VO2 max test. It was awful. My legs were so tired after little running last week and stacking in the miles these few days. My legs gave out before my lungs.

I was planning on running this morning but... I was at the library until 1 finishing a paper. Yay for finals..... I got my wisdom teeth out this morning and they said no running for a week. It was rough.

I shouldn't be running yet but it's a beautiful and I am sick of lying around feeling like crap. My teeth hurt running but it felt good to get some fresh air!

I just had to break in my new running shoes I got for Christmas. I ran 4 miles around my neighborhood then ran to my sister's to visit. My knee ached and teeth hurt but I miss running.

AM- I ran Shriner's along 11th Ave to the firestation and back. My teeth don't hurt and my knee hurt on the way back but I felt ok.

PM- I went to the gym to run on the treadmill. My knee hurt like none other and I only lasted 3 miles and another mile around the ice rink. I think it may be time to cross train until it heals fully.

Today my hip was super tight and I have no idea why. I rolled out and stretched a couple times and decided to bike. I did 40 minutes in the morning and another 40 at night.

One last try to run before deciding what to do. I ran in the morning and my knee hurt starting and by mile 3.5 (like every other run) killed. Time for a plan B.

I ran 5 this morning before going to see a dr about my knee. Nothing is broken or torn, just bruised. It kills me, but I have decided to give it a break, cross train and wait.

Biked for 40 minutes that night.
