New Year's Resolution- to keep my running blog updated. I have been training and running for the past three months, I just haven't blogged about it. Today I met at Sugarhouse to run with Tomy, Kiley, and Abigail. We did an adventure run to Tanner Park. Then we ran on the Parley's trail across the freeways to the flagpole and back to the park. It felt nice to run at an easy pace. I did my core after.

Hooray you blogged!!

First day back at track after a nice, long Winter break. We did the usual warm up and drills. Then we did wall sits, step ups, and a run. We ran up to Foothill and down to the cemetary on 5th S. We pushed the two laps in the cemetary and on the way back to the school. I did my core later.

Total Distance
6.00

Today I got to try high jump and long jump! And learned I am definitely a distance runner.... We ran to Liberty and did 3 800's. It wasn't that hard of a speed workout, but I have not run a speed workout in a long time so I felt pretty tired and sluggish. I hit 2:46, 2:47, 2:46. I did arm swings and my core.

Total Distance
7.50

The weather has been so nice and sunny we got to go to the track today. We ran up there and did 2 laps warm up. Then we did our usual drills and did our run. We ran to Legacy Bridge up to the gate past Red Butte. The way back, Bill told up to hit between 20 and 21 minutes. I pushed with Tomy and Bill kept yelling at us to take small quick steps and lean our hips forward. We were running pretty fast and finished in a little over 18 minutes. I did my core while waiting for everyone else.

Total Distance
8.00

Usual track warm and drills. Then the distance team got to practice hurdles! I have never tried hurdles before and so it was something new and fun. Probably one of the most entertaining practices with dinosaur hurdling, and knocking over a lot of hurdles. I ran 8 on my own after to Sugarhouse and 2 laps around. I felt ok, it was hard pushing myself though. I did my crunches and push ups after.

Total Distance
10.00

Today was the first true winter run- in a snow storm and a lot of slush. I met with Susannah and Bill at the park and ride on 3300 S. We ran along Wasatch Dr. forever and finished at Bill's house. It was pretty wet but it helped so much to have people to push with. My hips were really sore from all the hurdling yesterday but other than that I felt good.

Total Distance
10.00

Usual track warm up and drills. Then we did step ups, jump squats and burpees. Chris, Bill, Tomy and I did a 10 miler. We ran to Shriners, along 11th Ave, down City Creek and weaved our way through the streets back to the school.

Total Distance
8.00

Usual track warm up, but no drills. (yes!) Tomy, Camille, Sarah Sargent, Olivia, Bill and I went up to the track to run a speed workout. We ran the usual 2 mile warm up, then did a mile and 6 400's with equal recovery. I am starting to get a cold so I was congested and couldn't breathe too well. My gluts were way sore from the jump squats, but I gave it my best. My mile was 5:37.. I think... and my 400's were between 1:18-1:19. (The last one was 1:16). I felt sluggish because I haven't run speed in a long time. We did a mile cooldown to finish.

Total Distance
8.00

Usual warm up, drills then wall sits, leg lifts, arm swings, squats and push ups. We ran 8 miles- to the flagpole and down 2100 S. to the school.

Total Distance
8.00

Run to Fairmont- we did 10 strides then took the long way back. I did my crunches and push ups.

Total Distance
3.00

Quickest track workout ever! We ran to the track, 2 laps warm up, 4 laps speed changes, 2 laps cool down and run back to the school. My quads weren't as dead as yesterday.

Race: BYU Indoor Track Meet (1 Miles) 00:05:22, Place overall: 4
Total Distance

First. Track. Meet. It's weird that it is track season again. I ran 1.5 mile warm up before going in the bullpen. I was the last heat so I had lots of time to do drills while waiting. I got out pretty good in the start, and held on with the lead group. The leader broke away on lap 3, and I should have pushed up with another girl who passed me on lap 4. But, I kicked hard and finished 4th. It is weird to only be running a mile, instead of 3. But I pushed myself and gave it what I could. I ran 8 miles cool down in Provo, then finished 2.5 at home.

Total Distance
12.00

Sarah Sargent, Abigail, Tomy, Bill and I met at the Jordan River trail to do our long run. Bill, Tomy and I ran out 5 and back, and a 2 mile loop to finish. It was snowy and freezing when we started, but eventually it stopped snowing and warmed up. I was glad we weren't pushing hard today. I am sore from Saturday, and am starting to get a cough. Again. We did a few drills in the parking lot to help loosen up, and I did my core.

Total Distance
10.00

Speed workout at Liberty. We did the usual track stuff then ran to Liberty and did 6 800's with equal recovery. I felt better than speed at Liberty two weeks ago. My times were under 2:50 which was my goal. I did my core after.

Total Distance
11.00

Recovery run, in the rain, and it felt pretty good. It felt nice not to push the whole run, like usual. We ran to Sugarhouse, then did the cemetary run that we always do in the summer. I did my core.

Total Distance
8.50

We did wall sits and step ups at practice, then a fartlek workout at Sugarhouse. We ran grass laps and did 5-4-3-2-1 minutes on and 3-3-3-2-1 recovery. I felt o.k. and on the recovery, Bill and I would run back to Sarah to keep a group together which was better than running by myself. I did my core.

1 mile warm up, 2 miles speed changes, 1 mile cooldown.

2 miles warm up before my race. I felt really good about this race. I got out fast and I worked the whole time to keep my place in first. I could hear the girl behind me and kept myself ahead of her. Though 16 laps can be confusing- when I only had 200m left, I thought I had 400 so I didn't start kicking until later. I ran a mile cool down in the rain, then ran another 4.5 to finish for the week.

Happy birthday to me- and my present was a speed workout at the Oval!  A few of us met there later at night which was nice. Usual warm up and 5 1,000's. Usually I hate running these, but I felt good about what I did. My times were 3:28, 3:27, 3:27, 3:27, 3:25. We did a long cool down for 10 miles. I felt a lot stronger than last year when I would run that workout and I know I am improving. I did my core.

Total Distance
12.25

Usual track warm up and wall sits and step ups. We ran to Shriners, along 11th Ave, and down City Creek Canyon and back on South Temple. It felt good, except coming South Temple as usual. Did my core.

Easier day before a race. Usual warm up and leg lifts and wall sits. We ran to Sugarhouse, along 1900 E., down Sunnyside and added on to get an even 8.

Race at the Oval today. I got a nice long warm up- 3 miles and 1 mile with speed changes. Luckily I was in the first heat so I could be done because there were a lot more people there than what I expected. I got out the first lap and ran a fast first lap. I slowed down too much my second and third laps because I was an idiot and expected the others to push up to me if I slowed down.... but they didn't. One girl passed me at the end of the third lap and I pushed to not be passed by anyone. My last lap was my fastest and I finished with a 5:09. My time was better than I thought I would run and I would surprised I could run that time. I am faster than what I think. I am mad I slowed down so much on my middle two laps. I ran 5 miles cool down with the team. I did my core at home.

Nice job overall. The great thing is that you are in incredible shape and you can improve the slowing in the middle. It's something you can practice in workouts and get better at :D Congrats! 5:09 so early in the year!

This year the first Winter Series race was actually sunny! I ran a 3 mile warm up and barely made it to the line before we started. I ran my first mile in 5:37 which was the pace Bill wanted me to run. My second mile I slowed down 10 seconds. The last mile I was slowing and trying to keep going. One guy caught me and tried to pass me but I stuck with him. Eventually I pushed past him, passed a girl and finished the second girl. And a PR!! I ran 6 miles cool down and finished 3 more miles later.

I got another 4.5 mile warm up with some speed changes. This time I got to wait an hour before racing. I stretched and did a lot of drills while waiting. In the race, I got out in the front with another girl right next to me. I felt like I was going too fast so I relaxed and was too slow the first lap. At the end of the second lap, a group moved and I got gapped. I felt really flat and couldn't match. I tried to kick the lap 400 but got passed the last few meters. I felt horrible about my race. I was tired and frustrated. I finished 4.5 for a cool down.

I ran 2 mile shake out in the morning. I was at my nephew's baptism all afternoon but hurried to the meet as soon as I could, and it was close. I ran into the bullpen as the first heat of the 3200 had started... uh oh. I jogged on the outside of the track and did a lot of strides while waiting. First lap I was right next to another girl. My first lap was what it should be-74. Then I took the lead. Bill told me to run a 5:20 first mile and that was all I was focused on. I ran a 5:24 and felt tired. The fifth lap the girl behind me got ahead. She started gapping me, but I knew I had to hold on or I would die and get passed like yesterday. I could hear the third girl behind me and I knew she was close. When I heard my last split I knew I could break 11 so I stuck it out and kicked hard. I finished with a 10:56! A 20 second PR and I broke 11! I was so happy and I do believe in new days. After everyone else finished, I ran 8 miles cool down and another 4 at home.

Speed workout at the track. 2 mile warm up, and 1 mile speed changes. We ran 1000, 2 800's, and 4 400's. The pace was out 2 mile pace. That was nice because I knew I could run the pace, but it was a weird workout. My legs felt heavy and I felt like I had no form or rhythm and like I was stuck in slow motion. I ran all my splits, but I felt slow. My 1000 was 3:25, 800's were both 2:46 and my 400's were 1:19-1:20.

I had an acappella concert so I couldn't go to practice. I ran 5 in the morning and 6 in the afternoon. The 6 miler felt great- it was warm and sunny.

Speed again. We ran 3.5 warm up, 1 mile speed changes then 2 sets of 4 300's with an 800 recovery between sets. I ran 54-55 except my last one was 51. We ran a long cool down to finish. I did my core and got my new shoes!

This is the most miles I have done in one day and a week.... and now I feel it. I ran a 4.5 mile warm up before the race. The race was really long. I got out with a tight group for the first mile, which was nice. By mile 2, I was in no man's land for the rest of the race. After the turnaround I slowed down a lot. My legs got really heavy and I was exhausted. It was hard to finish but I did. I ran the course again for a cool down and ran 5 more at home to finish for the week.

Speed workout at the track today. We ran 2.5 warm up, mile speed changes and changed into flats. We ran 6 sets of a 400-200 with equal recovery. My splits were fast, and I wasn't sure I could hit all the 400's. But it was a beast day and I did. It helped so much to have Tomy and Chris to chase after. My 200's were 35, 35, 35, 34, 35, 34. My 400's were 70, 72, 70, 70, 69, 69. Those were the fastest 400's I have run and it hurt. But it hurt so good. We ran 2 miles cool down and I did my core.

Simplot day 1-I was so glad my race was before the mile. I ran 2 miles warm up, stretched, then 1 more mile. I had plenty of time for a lot of drills and strides. I was in the first of three heats. One girl took the lead the first few laps and I just stuck on her shoulder. My goal was to run 42's and thats what I focused on. After a few laps I took the lead and took it one lap at a time. A couple times a girl tried to pass me but I took the lead again. I kicked the last 400 hard so I wouldn't get caught and finished first. My mile time was 5:38 and I finished with 11:08. My splits were pretty even which I was happy with. I felt pretty good during the race and happy about it. I ran 4 miles cooldown and then cheered everyone else.

I ran 2 mile shake out in the morning before driving back to Pocatello. I ran 2 miles warm up and did drills and strides outside. Then I headed in to the bullpen. I was really nervous about racing but excited. I was seeded with the fastest time and started on the top of the banked track. By the end of the first lap I had the lead. My first mile was slower than what it should've been. I had no idea how far the pack was behind me but I just kept going. My mile time was 5:26. Then a girl came up and took the lead. My usual reaction is to let her go, but not this race. I immediately got right on her shoulder and pushed with her for the next few laps. As we started to pass girls, I got the energy to push past her and never have I run so scared in my life. I was kicking hard the last 400 and my last 200 I was so dead but I was so scared I would get passed. I kicked hard enough and finished first! I felt so relieved it was over but was thrilled that I won. I was happy with my time (10 second PR) and that my second mile was faster than my first. It only got better as Bill threw twinkies to me by the award stand :) I was really happy with my race and it was a 3-peat of 3200 champion at Simplot Sus! I ran a 3 mile cool down.

I was dreading the 15K- last year I got really bad blisters and it snowed a lot. We ran a mile warm up and it was super windy. I got out and stuck with Tomy. We ran our first mile around 5:57 and made it our goal to run 6 minute pace. I made it my goal to stick on Tomy as long as I could. It made a HUGE difference running with him. I dropped my sweatshirt at mile 3 at the water station. The first half went by pretty quick, but as soon as we turned the wind was horrible. the next few miles were really hard running against the wind. Our pace slowed, but we caught and passed one guy. At mile 7 we started picking it up, and mile 8 really pushing to just get it over with. I finished one second behind Tomy. This race felt better than the 10K and my pace was an average of 6:03. I was really happy about my time, and I had less than a mile cooldown! (opposite of 2 weeks ago....) My time was almost 7 minutes faster than last year.

First day of outdoor track! And it is definitely track season- It was nice and sunny at the beginning of the workout and by the end it was blizzarding. Welcome to track. We have a lot of new people on the team. It is fun to have more people at workouts. We ran usual 2 lap warm up, stretching circle, drills. Then we ran 6 laps of drill, stride, and bleachers. Afterwards a group of us ran 7.5 to get an even 10 for the day. We ran to Red Butte, JCC and across 11th Ave to Popperton Park and back the Shriners run. It was supposed to be a recovery run, but I was pushing the pace because I wanted to go to the basketball game. The last mile were in the snow and brutal wind. Did my core.

Beautiful day to run outside today- I love Spring! We met at the track and did usual 2 lap warm up, stretching, and drills. A group of us ran to Liberty to run a tempo run. We ran 3 miles warm up and ran 6 miles tempo on the sidewalk (a little more than 4 laps). I was supposed to run a 6:05-6:10 pace. My first 2 miles were faster because I was in a group with Tomy, Emily, and Chris. Mile 3 was slower, but I was still o.k. on my pace. Miles 4 and 5 I was dying. I felt like I couldn't push any harder and was running by myself. The last mile I was kind of running with Emily. That helped a lot to finish faster and my time was 37:14. My times for the 800 was 2:28 and 2:29 (long day if you PR during a workout....) I didn't think the 300's would be too hard, but they were. It wasn't my legs that were hurting, but I couldn't breathe. My first set was 52, 54, 53, 54, 53 and my second set was 53, 53, 53, 52, 52. It helped so much to have Emily to push with on the 300's, and to have Bill yelling at me during the last 2. As much as I didn't want to push harder, I just did it automatically. It was a hard workout and I am glad it is over. Did my core.

Speed workout/time trials today. 1 mile warm up, 1 mile speed changes then the mile. I could tell the first 100 meters we were starting too slow so I moved up to push the pace. My first 2 laps were within a second of the pace I should be running. It helped to run the first 2 laps with Chris and Tomy. I finished at 5:22 (I was supposed to hit 5:20). We ran a lap, then the 800. The wind was really annoying by this point. My 800 was 2:31, then we finished with 6 400's. My times were 71, 73, 72, 72, 73, 72. Usually I like running 400's and do well. Today though I felt so exhausted. My legs would not more any faster and hurt so bad. I felt like I had nothing to push with and no drive. I really hope I get out of this rut before we start racing. We ran 4 miles cooldown. Did my core.

Girls super meet at Davis today. I ran a little over a mile warm up, did drills and strides and raced the mile. I got out first and kept it the whole race. I was surprised one of the other girls didn't hang onto me in the race like she has in the past. My first lap was 74 and I felt like my stride was stuttered and it felt weird. I tried to push my second and third laps because I always slip up a lot. (both were 77) When I heard my 800 was 2:31, I knew I would be close to breaking 5. The last lap I was pushing hard into the wind and ran a 5:02. I felt so light headed and shaky after, but felt pretty good about my time. Best mile race I've had in a long time. I stretched, ran another 2 miles then raced the 2 mile. I was way more exhausted from the mile than I thought I would be. I had some really slow laps in the two mile, but won with a 11:07. Ha, before the end of the first lap one of my spikes was untied. I had some deja vu of my first 13 miler up Emigration Canyon with Bill, and knew I had to keep running even if my shoe was untied.... I am so happy about my mile and am excited to race at Pineview! Did my core.

St George and back in a day drive- oh party. I ran a 2 mile shake out before we drove down. I got 1.5 warm up and plenty of time for drills and strides. It was really hot and I am so glad I was the first race. This race was pretty similar to my Davis race. I got out first and kept the lead the whole time. There was some wind and I didn't have anyone close to push with. My first 800 was the same split as my first 800 at Davis (2:31). I kicked harder the last 300 at this race though. I ran the same time and at first I was mad. But I guess it is better I didn't slow down. I ran a mile and cheered the rest of the team. A few of us ran an 8 mile cool down which was probably the longest cool down ever! This race was fun, even if I didn't run as fast as I hoped.

I thought I was crazy to race a 5K after Pineview but I did so much better than I thought I would. (I was crazy because somehow I forgot to pin my number on.... like I haven't run a race before) I ran a 2 mile warm up with strides. I got out fast-well everyone did. It was entertaining seeing people drop out after sprinting the first .15. My first mile was 5:30. I focused on pushing on the flat part past the post office because that's where I slowed down so much last year. I caught and passed someone on the downhill to Foothill. My 2 mile was 11:00 and then I decided to try and break 17. I pushed hard down Sunnyside trying to close the gap between me and the next guy. I never caught him but it helped to see someone to chase. I finished first girl (or woman as they announced) and broke 17! I was really happy. I ran 7 miles cool down with Bill and Tomy.

I focused on pushing harder the second lap because that is where I usually slip. My 800 was 2:29 so it would be close. By the 600, a girl pushed up right behind me and I had to race. I was so scared she would pass me because I could hear her and see her shadow. I started kicking with 300 to go, and was pushing harder by the 200. I finished first, and with a 5:01. So close again. But I felt really good about my race- I pushed myself and fought to win. I ran 3.5 cool down with Tomy and Abigail. Then a group of us ran to Harmon's and back for another mile. I laid in the tent for a couple of hours until the 3200. The wind got worse and worse as the meet went on. I ran a 1.5 warm up and then raced the 3200. The wind was just ridiculous and my time was super slow but I finished first. I ran 2.5 cool down at the meet and another 4.5 at home to finish my mileage.

Crazy race but it was AWESOME! I had the last races of the group on Saturday night. I ran the mile at 5:45 and the 3200 at 7:15 both in the invited sections of the meet. (I never had my Garmin for my warm up and cooldown...) I ran about 2 miles warm up before the mile. We had to restart once (which was good because I needed more strides) I got out with the pack and made it my goal to push with them. My splits were close to under 5 (even for the mile not 1600) With 800 left, I knew it would pick up and I forced myself to stick with the group. I noticed I was in position to be in top 5 and wanted to medal. 2 girls were spread out in front then the rest of the pack was chasing. The last lap one girl passed me, and with 300 to go I followed her and tried to separate from everyone. I was kicking hard to not get passed and to get under 5. I finished 4th and broke 5!! I was so happy! But not much celebration because I had to get ready for the 3200. I iced my legs a little and stretched then started running again. My legs felt pretty tired but I wanted to finish it off. This race was pretty hard- mentally I was struggling to stay focused because my legs were heavy and I was tired. I stuck with the group the first mile and ran a 5:10. I wanted to be under 10:30 so I was on pace. The group started spreading out and seperating and I was starting to die. But I stuck with a girl and tried to push past her. I kicked hard and finished 10th with a 10:28. I got off that track ASAP. I was so stressed about running both events so close together and it was hard, but I am glad I did it. I am so happy about my times! And I was even in the video this year because I wasn't last :)

That awkward moment when you reach your weekly mileage but you are still 4 miles away from your car... whoops. Bill, Tomy and I met at East for a long run (I needed 11). My brand new shoes got initiated to XC on the very muddy JCC trail. We ran to JCC and on the trail. The first part was hardly muddy, but by mile 2.5 on the trail it was so bad. I was slipping and falling everywhere and going pretty slow. We picked it up once we were out of the mud, and as we turned off the trail to another trail unfortunately I knew where it would go. And it would be over. 2 summers ago we ran the trail to City Creek and back (14 miles) which is probably on the list of workouts to never repeat. We ran to City Creek, then down to South Temple. I hit 11 when we were just heading down City Creek, and only picked up the pace to hurry and finish. We finished at 15 going up the 900 S. on the hill. It has been a long time since I have run for 2 hours straight....

I got out first and could hear one girl right on my shoulder. My first 400 was 72. My 800 was 2:26 and I knew I had to push the third lap to be under 5. The girl stuck with me and that helped me so much to push harder. I focused on separating from her at the 300 and with 200 to go I kept sprinting harder to finish. I finished first and was under 5!! I was so happy-I wasn't sure I could do it because of high mileage and how tired I was. It did help to have someone chasing me so close behind. I ran a couple miles then ran the 800 in the medley. And it was basically in a workout, by the time I started our team was in last by almost 100 m... But I out kicked a girl down the stretch so we weren't last. Awesome race day. After my 12 hours of sleep, I ran a 2 mile shake out run then went to the meet in the afternoon. I got 3 miles warm up before the mile. I got out in first and was pushing hard to get a fast time. There were 2 Davis girls who stuck right on me the whole race and that helped me to push harder. My first lap was 70 and I felt pretty good but I slowed too much in my second lap (my 800 was 2:25) but I was still within breaking the record if I had a fast second half. My third lap, I didn't want to push too hard and take away my kick, but I remembered Bill told me to race the third lap and I did. The last lap I was working to gap the two girls and I gave it my all down the last stretch. I finished with a 4:54 (a PR, and meet and stadium record) and was so happy! The 3200 was only an hour and a half later but it didn't seem too bad because I doubled at Arcadia in a short time. I stretched my legs and got another mile before racing again. But in my 3200 I was much more tired and sore than I thought I would. I was not fighting for a good time, but to stay in first position and win. Two girls stuck on me the first 5 laps, then one fell off. The other girl kept moving up by me and on the last lap got around me. I had to kick hard the last 100 meters to beat her. I ran a 10:45, which is a PR in Utah and the meet and stadium record. However, all my 3200 races this season have been running on tired legs from the mile. This was the last meet I have to double in one day. I am excited to race the 3200 on fresh legs and to see how fast I can run it. I ran the last leg of the 4x800 to finish the meet. I won the athlete of the meet award and I felt so good about my races. Today was a turn around day after a long week of being tired, sick, and sore. I met Bill at Sugarhouse later to run 8.5 and finish my mileage for the week.

Amazing race day today! Ran a 2 mile shake out before driving to the meet. Ran 2 miles warm up and did drills and strides before starting. I was nervous because it was the first race with all the competition. The first lap I got out and took control of the race. My goal was to beat the record and I needed a fast first 1600 to be close. The first 800 there was a group close behind, but I slowly separated from them. My first 1600 was 5:11 and that was cutting it close. Laps 5 and 6 were the hardest mentally to push through. I had pulled away from the group and was pushing by myself which was hard. But when I saw I was still on pace to break the record and hearing the crowd cheering I could pull through. With one lap to go, the time was 9:08 and I knew I needed to kick hard to pull it off. I was close to lapping girls so I focused on passing which helped me to kick hard and finish strong. And I did it! A 10:22- PR and new state record! I felt really good after my race and was so happy. Ran a 6 mile cool down with Bill and Abigail. Later ran 2 more miles and took a 15 minute ice bath.

Another crazy race day today. Ran 2 mile shake out and sat around at the meet waiting to run. Ran 3 miles warm up, drills and strides and back on the track to race with the same girls. My goal was to break the record but I knew this race would be much closer than the 3200. I took control and led for the first 3 laps. At the 800 and 1200 I was off by 3 seconds of where I wanted to be time wise. I could see on the screen the tight pack of 5 and I was running scared. On the gun lap, a girl moved in first and I didn't react quick enough. When I did, another girl slid into second so I was pushing with her and the lead girl gapped us by a stride or two. I ran the last lap pushing so hard and raced all the way to the finish. I was 3rd and less than a second behind the first girl. I was disappointed that I let 2 girls slip past me but it was a learning experience so I will be ready for state. I won the athlete of the meet award and ran the fastest 9 mile cool down ever- just to finally finish. It was a lot of track this weekend, but very memorable and I am excited for state!

3 mile morning shake out run. You know it's a rough day when Bill calls in two pacers for workout... I ran 6 800's and I am SO glad the pacers were there. I didn't run with my watch, so I don't know how fast I was going. But by the third one I was just hanging on to the other person's stride, not able to run it on my own. It was a brutal workout but I am grateful for those who helped.

Day 1 of state- I can't believe it is already the end of the season, and my last time running at state! I ran 2 miles shake out before getting on the bus. The 1600 race was at the beginning of the meet and the bus got there as they were calling final call. I did a few strides then did a lot of drills while waiting in the bull pen. Then the race. I took the lead at the end of the first curve and focused on staying on the INSIDE of the lane, ha. I can't remember my lap splits but I was so nervous and running scared. I had no idea how close the next girl was but I knew she would be close and kicking to pass me. I started to pick up the pace with 500 to go, and still had the lead at the gun lap. I was running scared and didn't react just like at BYU. Before the 200 a girl passes me and took the lead. I swung to her right as we headed down the home stretch. I was so close and gave it my all to get ahead, but she was doing the same. About 10 meters before the finish line, my stride was off and I stumbled and was pretty sure I was going to fall and not finish, but I recovered and finished. I was second by .18 of a second. I gave it my all to fight, but I wish I could have been more confident when I did have the lead. I ran 3 miles cool down and a mile later. My legs felt pretty good after my race until later in the afternoon.

Day 2 of state. The 3200 was very first and I had more time for a warm up. I ran 2 miles shake out then 2 miles warm up. The 3200 has been my stronger race even though I don't like running the 8 laps. I felt much more confident going into this race and knew I had a state record in my name to defend. I took the lead at the beginning and went out fast, trying to set a new record. But I definitely was not as fresh or rested as BYU invite. I gapped the group pretty well, but it was hard for me to push alone. My 1600 was 5:12, slower than I wanted. I tried to pick it up, but I was stuck in a slower pace. The last 1,000 my team started yelling that a girl in the group was making a move and broke from the group. That's when I remembered to race- no matter how far ahead I was, I had no idea how strong they were coming. I finished first with a 10:31. My legs were killing me, but I finally a state title and my record still remained. I never thought I could be first in state in any event! I ran a cool down then sat around all afternoon until the 800. This was my first time this season racing the 800. I have never really liked it but I haven't raced it that much. I had a horrible start, but finished 4th with a new PR of 2:18. I was relieved to be done with state- I was so nervous for my races but happy with how I did.

WOW! This race was.... incredible but bittersweet. I ran 2 shake out in the morning and didn't race until evening. I ran 2 warm up, got my drills and strides in. I couldn't believe I was at Nationals and running against the top girls. I was the only West Coast girl in the race. I was really nervous to be running with a lot of girls who are just as fast as I am. When the gun went off, I immediately thought "rail" and dropped into lane one close to the rail. First lap went by fast and ending the second lap I began to feel pain and realized my two "freebie" laps were over and it was time to work. The third lap, the lead girl began to gap the group. At the beginning of the fourth lap, there were three girls who moved away from the group and were gapping. I realized I was in ninth place and needed to move. At the 200 I moved out and surged to the front. On the straightaway, I closed up the front girls and we were all back in one tight group. Our mile was 5:07. The fifth lap I was running on the outside of the group and trying to keep contact with the front girl. Beginning the sixth lap I felt like we slowed, or I was ready to surge. I hesitated for a second then got gutsy and surged. As I began to move up, a girl from behind was moving at the same time. I took the inside lead and matched her stride. We surged together until the end of the lap and the group came with us. With 800 to go I didn't feel too horrible and was running scared. Every time I moved, the group matched and came with. At the 500 I thought to begin kicking and pick it up. At the 300, the girl next to me passed me and took the lead. It was deja vu of state and I decided not to let it happen again. At the 200 I kicked harder, and at the curve I swung and passed her. I dropped back into the rail and was only thinking of the girl I just passed and didn't know the next girl was so close. About 30 meters from the finish, the next girl came past me and before I knew it, it was over. I was second, by .73 of a second. After the race I felt really good. I had serious runners high and lots of adrenaline that didn't stop until 2 A.M. I was elated I was second at nationals, I got to lead a national race. But I got second, by so little. It leaves a sore spot and some lingering regret, especially now as I look back. I think this was probably my best race and as a true runner I say it was fun! It was a different experience to be back in pack running. I wasn't worried about crashing, pushing by myself, watching the clock tick. I was thinking when to move, where I should be and watching how the girls were running. It was such an amazing experience and really a fun race. Ran 4 cool down and took an ice bath.

They told us the mile would be earlier so I began to warm up earlier, but the meet was behind and I had a lot of time. I got 3 miles warm up, a lot of drills and strides. Looking around at the other girls, most of them looked like they were ready to puke and we hadn't even run yet! I was just happy to be running and enjoying every moment of my last high school race. There were only nine girls in the race and we were a tight pack the first 2 laps. I was torn with whether to run wide and with the front or run by the rail. After 2 laps the lead girl broke away and the group spread way out. I got gapped and was on my own. It was hard to run alone and be chasing. The last lap I forced myself not to give up and to kick to close the gap. I closed the gap and beat one of the girls in the group I was chasing. I didn't feel quite as good as yesterday after and my calves were so tight. But I was happy I had the opportunity to compete at nationals and what a great way to finish senior season!

Team workout at Cottonwood Complex. We ran the usual 3 mile warm up, 8 strides then did some 800's. We ran the XC regions course and did 6 800's with standing recovery. I felt pretty good. It is different to be switching from 800's on a track at full speed and 800's for XC when there are hills and a longer race. My first 3 800's were all 3:06, then I ran 2:55, 3:03, and 2:55. It is really weird to think I will never race there again. My hips were hurting really bad when we finished. Ran 3.5 cool down.

Good week with cross training included. From some of the Pics it looks like you guys had a great trip. Happy to see you got the pool runs in. Even though your weekly miles were down, with the pool runs and all the boating adventures I am sure you had, your time exercising was still there. You were active while getting some relaxation time to recovery from a great track season. Base building will be a key focus now for the next few weeks. Some strong tempos and a little speed thrown in to get you ready for the 10K, is all you will need. It will be a fun race to see how much you have improved from the previous year.

First and last race of the summer! I ran 2 miles warm up at the start before the race with some strides. I started right at the front of all the runners which helped. The first mile is always crazy- I was surrounded by lotsa guys sprinting. My first mile was 5:07 and I was pushing with Dakota for the next mile as we moved up. My 2 miles was around 10:20 and I began to hurt as I turned down South Temple. The first girl I had seen passed and gapped me down South Temple. It is downhill, but not enough to keep you going fast. I struggled to push because I was alone and gapped from people in front of me. Turning off South Temple I had to pick it up again because a pack of girls was coming. I finished 2nd woman overall with a new PR! When I finished my Garmin wasn't even at 6 and the last mile I was really confused because we went a different way. Come to find out, we finished on the marathon course instead of the 10K. I know I am a true runner because I wasn't thrilled I ran shorter but really angry. I ran 5 miles cool down. I like this race because it is the race that got me to start running cross country three years ago. My time has improved a lot by then-about 26 minutes and I can run the whole course now!

My first was was 84, a little slow. # 7, 10-12 were all 79 and the rest were all 80- right where I wanted to be. It was a pace I could handle for the full workout but still worked me. I ran 3.5 cool down. That night was my dad's YSA stake 5K at Sugarhouse Park  so I went to run. I ran a mile warm up before the race and a mile cool down after. We just ran 2 road laps so it wasn't too bad. I got out fast and after the first mile was pushing alone (2 guys were way ahead of me) I didn't feel too bad and felt like I pushed the whole race. It is a different experience running tempo with a big group instead of one or two other people. I stuck with the big group and about mile 4.5 on the road I seperated the big group and went with the lead group. The big hills after mile 5 were really brutal but it helped to chase girls down and push with them. The tempo was 5.37 long and I averaged 6:27. I felt pretty good again. Long recovery run. I miss running on trails and running at parks. So far I haven't found a good park like Sugarhouse or Liberty to run. I ran up to the Shoreline trail above the temple. It turned out to be more hilly than I expected and my quads were already pretty sore, so I got off the trail by the base of the Y. Running down to the main street was way downhill so my quads were super sore and tight by the end. I found a cemetery about 2 miles south of campus (which made me happy) and ran a lap in there before going home. I rolled out my quads with the stick and it killed.

There is a really long trail by Cascade Golf Course( if you have a car.) It's relatively flat, and it's dirt. I've run as much as 15 miles on it. No parks(that I know of)except Kiwanis, and that's not as good as Sugarhouse or Liberty. Coach usually takes the team to run up Hobblecreek and Provo Canyons. It's tough finding good loops around the school.

A.M. lab rat workout- I did the blood lactate threshold test on the treadmill this morning at 7. It was a pretty cool test but hurt. I ran a 10 minute warm up then started. I started at 5.8 mph and each set would increase by .5 mph. I ran at each speed for 4 minutes, then they took by pulse and pricked my finger to get the lactate level. I had to keep going until I was over 4. I felt good starting out, but my legs were really tired towards the end. The last set was really hard and on the pain scale of 6 to 20 I was at the 19.5. I finally got to stop after 10.3 when my level jumped a lot and 11 finger pricks later I was done. (about 6 miles) Afternoon workout at Kiwanis Park. We ran 3 sets of 1200-800 at 6 minute pace again. I felt really tired today and did not feel as good as Monday's workout but running with the group of 12 girls really helped me to keep going. Ran a cool down to get 8. I am ready to lower mileage next week and race with my team!

I felt tired overall but was able to push with the group. It took me a couple repeats to feel the pace and get where I wanted to be on the last one. I ran 3:33, 3:32, 3:35, 3:30 and 3:28. I ran a cool down then did my weights and core.

First college race was awesome! We raced in the evening so I had all afternoon to relax and sleep. The course was a 4k on a golf course. It was pretty flat, just some loops with a downhill finish. I was really excited and it felt pretty mellow and low-key. I got 2 miles warm up and my legs felt great. I got my spikes on (remembering to loop my laces) had a pixi stick and did some good strides. There were 14 teams there. I got a really good start and was right in the front of the pack. I wasn't sure if I was going out too hard but I felt good and decided just to run my best and go for it. I stayed with the front pack to mile 1, which was 5:17. I was surprised because I set my goal for the race to run around 15.... But I kept going. The pain started to set in after the mile as the lead girl broke the group and I was in 6th chasing a group of 3 runners ahead. The last 1,000 I really felt like puking and mentally was struggling. I tried to pull myself together to finish strong. 1 girl passed me and I moved with her and we passed another girl. The downhill finish was crazy fast and I was just behind a group of 4. After recovering I realized I was the first BYU girl, 6th overall and ran a faster time than I was aiming for. I was really surprised! But I felt like it was an awesome race because I went out hard and stuck with it. I ran 5 miles cool down and my calves will be super sore tomorrow.

Awesome workout. We ran an interval workout at the track (with music which meant a lot of singing along) This was a workout that I liked, not because it didn't hurt, but it was a workout that I had to work hard to finish. We ran 8x800's with 3 minutes recovery. We split in 2 groups and we ran 2 across the lane, rotating who led each repeat. That helped a lot to just settle into the pacefor some repeats and other times leading. I ran 2:37 for 6 of them and 2 were 2:35 (the ones I led). I felt good for the first 4 then it started to get harder. But it felt similar to all the speed workouts I did in high school so it felt so good to push through and finish well. I ran a long cool down to get 11 before weights.

Odd but I loved today's workout. All day I was dragging, really tired and not looking forward to a hard workout. We ran to the track and ran 2 miles warm up. Coach didn't tell us the whole workout but told us as we went. We wore out spikes and ran 1 400 on the grass (a 75). Then we got 10 minutes rest before running an all out mile on the track in our flats. When I heard that, my stomach dropped and I was having a lot of flashbacks of racing the mile on this track.... not the most pleasant thing. But it is super cool now be on the same team as my competitors. I ran a couple laps and did speed changes until we started. Our first lap was 73. The second lap I felt like we slowed down but I was stuck behind the leaders. One girl broke out and sped up. 800 was 2:29. I am not sure what the third lap was, but at the 300 I moved out wide to kick and finish. I was 3rd and ran a 4:59. It is crazy to think what I spent weeks trying to break I can now run in a workout. Then we finished with 7 400's on the grass at 76. I felt so good on these and ran 75-76. Then I ran 5 miles cool down before weights and a 10 minute ice bath after. I loved today's workout because I pushed hard and it felt good to push hard. It was also very similar to what I ran in high school and that was way nice.

It was really frustrating. I love the speed workouts where I can push myself into pain that feels good. I felt like I couldn't push today. My 400's were at 77 and 800's 2:40. Well this race was a good experience. It's crazy that it is only my second college race because I raced so much in high school. I ran a mile this morning before breakfast and felt great, just cold. I wanted a longer warm up because it was cold so I ran 3 on the course and got in a few strides at the line before beginning. The race was really big- 48 teams and 327 girls all to elbow and race. The first mile of the race was fun. We were packed tight and it was entertaining to throw some elbows and jostle around for position. My first mile was 5:32- right where I wanted to be. I had to pick it up and push with the girls around me for the next few loops to the 3k. My 3k split was 10:22-faster than I was planning on and coach had said the second half of the race goes even faster. The second half of the race, I felt weird. I didn't feel like I was running that fast and felt like I was slowing down. I wasn't fully there and racing. I was hanging out with girls around me and trying to pass when I would settle but I didn't feel as sharp mentally to be racing. I think a big part of this was, the race was so big, I couldn't see anyone from my team so I didn't have anyone to chase or work up to. I think someone yelled 17:15ish by the 5k (which is a new PR!) And I realized my season goal of breaking 21 in the 6k might be checked off. The finish was uphill and the longest finish of my life. I was so tired but reminded myself every person in a point and counts. I am thrilled with my time- I guess that is the reason I am so tired now. I ran 6 miles cooldown with the team.

And I was right- we ran a very wet and muddy race. It rained early this morning and all during my warm up and I was splattered with mud by the end and my spikes got the true cross country initiation. I got a good 3 mile warm up and felt good, just really nervous. We started on the field in the middle of the track. We had to start again because a girl fell in the chaos of wet slippery mud and I didn't get as good of a start the second time. I spent the first part of the race moving up into position with the San Fran girls. (and laughing when I saw some girl shoving with her shoulders in the first 400 meters for position...)The first loop went by really quick and I was in a good spot- stride for stride with the taller SF girl. I was dreading the second loop because it is usually hard but I still felt really good. I was right in the front of the pack with a LMM, Portland and 3 San Fran girls. It felt good and I just knew the last lap would be a lot faster and harder- and it was. I was fine until we ran down off the field and into the last 800 meter loop. The group started pulling away and I was struggling to stay with them. We all started kicking and I was determined to get at least one girl. I passed one girl before the track and down the final stretch passed another girl to finish 4th with a 20:38. And it must have been a good kick- the girl I passed told me I have a bad a-- kick... :) Fourth place is better than I thought- I had no idea I would with the front pack for that long. Now as I look back though I am kind of mad. I was only 3 seconds behind the winner. 3 seconds. And I felt so good for the first few miles. During the second loop, I thought "take the lead and pick it up" but immediately decided it was would be too scary because it is a college race and they would definitely pass me. So I sat. I am mad I couldn't gut it out the last part because I had stuck with the top group for the whole race. I don't know if I will have another race like this but I got to stop letting college racing intimidate me. So I will be back next year in the front to win it.

And just like that, the season is over. Crazy how that happens. The race today, I didn't feel like my best. At all. I got my usual warm up in and felt great and was ready to go. I started out with the front group where I needed to be. But even after the first 400 I could tell I was tired. I tried to snap out of it but couldn't. I fell off the main group and was dragging. I stuck with a SUU girl just to keep moving so I wouldn't crash. I felt like I was in slow motion and it was hard not just physically, but mentally. I had to push so hard mentally to keep myself going. At the 3 mile I was 20th. I knew I needed to pick it up but it was so hard. I heard 2 people yell "800!" and soon after someone else yelled "400!" I chose the 400 option and forced myself to focus on passing. It felt like the longest finish ever, staring at it. Luckily I passed a few girls and finally finished. I am not too thrilled with my race. I ran well but really felt like crap. I don't know what it is about this race but I hope it doesn't happen again. I felt sick after the race and still do so I am ready for my week break before figuring out what to do next. Even though my last race was frustrating, looking over my season, I am really happy. I did better than I ever imagined for my first year at college! It was a great year for experience and for our team especially. (7 of the 9 of us had never been to Conference or Regions before) and I am so grateful to be running for BYU and excited for what will happen in the years to come.

We are all so proud of you Natalie! You had a fabulous break through freshman season. The next 3 years of XC are going to be awesome. Enjoy your break and get ready to kick some trash in indoor.

Nice cap to the season Natalie. You ladies have a young team and w/ another year and more experience, you'll be right up there. Way to step in a lead the squad as a freshman!

Today's run was awesome! I am home for Thanksgiving so I ran with the East team. We ran up death hill in the 11th Ave cemetery. It wasn't as bad as I remember. Then we ran to City Creek drinking fountain, then up the trail to JCC and back to East the Shriners way. This was the longest run I have done since summer training and it was hard but felt so good. It was gorgeous running on the trails looking out over the valley and watching the sunset. I have missed running in Salt Lake!

And today's run kicked my pockets again. I met the East team at Sugarhouse and we ran the cemetery run. We started out at 7 minute pace and the front guys gapped me. Tomy dropped back in the cemetery to run with me which helped. I averaged 6:53, which is probably the fastest I have done 10 (not in a race) It was great to be done so fast but I was super tired after. Yay for Tomy and how easily he can beat me!

I am sick of running the same routes for long runs in Provo. So today I ran an adventure run to Orem and back. At mile 4, I started picking it up and felt good to keep pushing the rest of the run. Today was an awesome day for running. I ran 10 in the morning with the girls then we went to the Egg Nog Challenge! This is the third year the boy's team has done it and the first year the girls joined (and probably the last) We did it at the outdoor track and it was freezing. Everyone brought their own egg nog and we started with drinking a cup of nog. Then the timer started and we ran a lap and drank a cup until you puke. (you have to start a new lap every three minutes so you have to drink or run fast) I felt great the first 5 laps then the last few were bad.  I finished 9 laps and was trying to drink my 10th cup but puked it up so I stopped. And 15 minutes later finally puked everything. The winner was a freshman who  ran 14 laps and drank 15 cups! It was crazy, gross and I probably won't be the nog challenge next year but it was fun!

I felt pretty tired and there is no way I could have done the tempo without someone to push with. He gapped me along 13th but I caught him by the end. I averaged 6:27 and we finished with 10 miles. After lunch and a short nap, I ran 4 more miles to be done for the week. I felt really tired. Welcome back to high miles.
